Statement & Process
Most of Roberta’s carved forms reflect the movement, shapes, patterns and surfaces that she is drawn to in nature—the pet also fan apple blossom, the grooves of a spindle shell, the pattern of a hosta leaf or the texture of a weathered rock all inform and inspire her work.
Roberta uses a combination of wheel thrown and hand-built forms in grolleg porcelain that are altered, carved and sprigged. With a variety of air brushed matte and gloss glazes that enhance the surfaces, the pieces are fired to a high temperature in a gas kiln, cone 10 reduction, around 2350F.
